Valparaíso, Chile 2020

For the first time in South America, the 2020 World Conference on Natural Resource Modeling was held on January 8-10, 2020 in Valparaiso, Chile, hosted by Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María. The theme of the conference was “Decision support methods for natural systems at risk”. Organizers could no have predicted the timeliness of this theme as the COVID-19 pandemic was starting to manifest and spread around the World. The conference focus was on how quantitative applied research from diverse disciplines can assess different levels of risk, support decisions oriented to minimize them, and propose approaches for operationalizing sustainability concepts. Special attention was devoted to fishery, ecology, biodiversity, wildfire, water, pollution mitigation, and natural resource management in general. One of the WCNRM2020 main goals was thus, to foster cooperation among disciplines of mathematics, economics, management, ecology, energy, and computer sciences, among others.

Attendees who unwittingly risked travelling during the global emergence of SARS-CoV-2 to exchange ideas and information about natural systems at risk.
