Theme: Understanding and Managing Complex Systems
Purpose
The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for the presentation of recent progress in the use of mathematical modeling techniques to help in the understanding and managing of complex natural resource systems. The systems comprise a wide variety of resources: renewable and exhaustible resources, terrestrial and marine resources, energy, minerals and materials, land and soils, water resources, problems of pollution and residuals, managed biological populations, integrated pest management, agriculture and fisheries, rangelands and forest, wildlife and wilderness, preservation of endangered species and of genetic diversity, and still others.
Special Workshop
The meeting will be followed on Thursday 16 December by a special workshop on the mechanisms and role of density dependence in resource dynamics.
Keynote Speakers
- Mark Burgman, University of Melbourne Making robust decisions for species conservation: satisficing under uncertainty
- Wayne Getz, University of California, Berkeley Two new methods for analyzing temporal and spatial patterns in elephants, wolves, and lesser creatures
- Hugh Possingham, University of Queensland Optimal monitoring within an environmental decision-making framework

The conference will be held on the city campus of RMIT University. This is well served by trams and is very close to Melbourne Central train station.

Accommodation
Accommodation will be available at a residence of the University of Melbourne. This is within walking distance of the conference venue and will cost about AU$53. We have also secured a special rate ( AU$104) at a hotel close to RMIT. Details will be available soon.
Registration Fees
Early registration for paid-up RMA members will be about AU$200. This will include an outing to Healesville Sanctuary, all lunches and the welcome cocktail. Student registration fees will be AU$100. [Currency conversion 5 April: AU$1.00 = US$0.76 ] More details will follow as things firm up.

- 13 December, 2004 – Conference presentations begin at 9AM
- 31 December, 2004 – (Optional) Final date for submission of full papers for consideration in the special issue of Natural Resource Modeling.

Conference Proceedings
A special issue of Natural Resource Modeling will be published that will include selected papers presented at the conference. There are two deadlines for submission of full papers to be considered for publication. Manuscripts submitted before 15 September 2004 will be refereed and the authors notified of acceptance (or rejection) before 15 November 2004. Full papers can also be submitted until the end of December 2004 but the referees’ decisions might not be available before the end of March, 2005.
Abstracts of papers to be presented at the conference will be accepted until 12 November 2004.
