Modelling Natural and Biotic Resources in a Changing Planet.

This multidisciplinary conference is being sponsored by the Resource Modeling Association to provide a forum for new developments in modeling and analysis of natural resource systems, particularly ecological, economic and management aspects in forestry, fisheries, wildlife, agriculture, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, and management of multiple use resources.

Location

Lesvos is Greece$apos;s third largest island located at the easternmost part of the Aegean Archipelago, with a rich history and varied, fascinating scenery. Its natural attractions include extensive olive fields, pine forests and Mediterranean type shrubs. It is the birthplace of Theophrastos, cosidered the "father" of botany, the illustrious ancient poets Sappho and Alkaios, the guitarist Arion, the musician Terpander and Pittakos of Mytilene, one of the Seven Sages of antiquity, it even today continues the tradition of producing famous artists, poets and writers.

The conference will take place at the Congress Center of the Natural Museum of Petrified Forest www.aegean.gr/petrified_forest located at the picturesque port of Sigri, Lesvos.

The conference is being hosted by the Department of the Environmental Studies Biodiversity Conservation Laboratory at the University of the Aegean and the Natural Museum of Petrified Forest.

Call for Papers

Abstracts of 100-200 words are invited for papers addressing developments in the modeling and analysis of natural resource systems, particularly ecological models, and economic and management aspects of forestry, fisheries, wildlife, agriculture, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, and management of multiple use resources.  Along with the abstract, please include: all authors' names, the complete address of the contact author, the title of the paper, and whether an oral or poster format is preferred. The deadline to submit abstracts is extended until 15 May 2002.. Submission by email is preferred and should be sent to gmats@aegean.gr. Submissions may also be posted to:

A number of Journal Editors (Natural Resource Modelling, Ecological Modelling, Environmental Management and Health) have expressed interest in publishing selected contributions in a special issue volume , after peer review. The Scientific committee will decide soon on the forum. For those interested in the above option please plan to bring with you a manuscript of your contribution following general guidelines for authors of the Journal "Ecological Modelling" http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ecolmodel.


Paper Delivery Options

Presenters of oral presentations may use overhead projectors, slides or a computer data projector (Microsoft Powerpoint format). No special arrangements need to be made for any of these options.

Poster presentations will have an area of 1.2 x 0.9 meters to work with and all presenters should already have received instructions from the conference organizers. If you are presenting a poster and have not received instructions yet, please send email to gmats@aegean.gr for the information.


Registration

Registration fees include lunches, opening reception, and banquet. All fees are in US dollars.  Remember that you can pay member rates by joining with your registration for US$55. This is the same price as nonmember registration, but with all the benefits of a year's membership.

Registration Desk

Main floor (lobby) of Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest. Open Sunday from 10 am and daily 8-2 pm. On Sunday morning crew will be on call to assist attendees with housing and miscellaneous needs.


Meals

Every morning breakfast (7-8 am) and lunch (1-3 pm) will be served at the outdoor conference cafeteria. The meals will be prepared according to traditional recipes and offered from the local associations of women of the local villages. There will be a break between morning and afternoon sessions allowing attendees some relaxing time. A beautiful beach is within 5 min. walk time. Afternoon sessions will last until 8 when dinner time will start. This timetable is adapted to local weather conditions, traditions and normal operating hours of restaurants in Greece. During each session every day a coffee/tea break will take place.


Language

English will be the official language of the conference. No simultaneous translation will be offered.


Visas

Participants from a number of countries will need visa for entering Greece. The Schengen treaty states that a visa to one Schengen country is valid for all Schengen countries. Please check with the authorities in your country or with the nearest Embassy of the Hellenic Republic. Please also check if a letter of invitation is needed to get a visa.


Banks-currency

In June 2002 we will be able to accept bank notes and coins only in euro since Greece has entered the euro region last January. Cash-dispensers are available in a number of locations including the airport of Mytilene, taking a number of credit cards. Foreign currency and travellers cheques can be converted in all banks. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels, department stores, and in some restaurants. We hope to be able to have an on-site service for exchange. Banking hours are 8.30-14.00.

Message board & Internet

A message board will be located lose to registration desk, ground floor. A computer with internet access will be at attendees disposition for mail checking.

How to get to Sigri, Lesvos

By Air

The island of Lesvos is accessible by air from Athens International Airport and Thessaloniki Airport. During June at least 7 daily flights are available to Mytilene airport with Olympic Airways (http://www.olympic-airways.gr/), and Aegean Air (http://www.aegeanair.gr/.

For those travelling from (or via) Europe a number of inexpensive charter flights are available for Mytilene as well. Flying time from Athens is 35 min. By Boat

Regular Boat Service is available daily (2-3) from the port of Pireaus (Athens) and Thessaloniki. At least one of the boats is of the high speed and makes the trip in 6 hrs.

From Mytilene the trip to Sigri takes another 1 1/2 hour. A number of coaches will transport attendees to and from the conference venue. The final schedule (departing times from the airport) will be published when registration is completed and participants have provided their travel itineraries. Taxi and regular bus service is also available.

Car Rentals

Renting a car gives much of the freedom to explore more of the island during your stay. Some of the international firms are operating in the island like HERTZ, AVIS, Europcar, and more. A variety of small traditional hotels and rooms for rent located at Sigri, the congress site are reserved for the conference at a price of US$35 each person (including breakfast).
