There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow position at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen / Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research within global and regional climate variability. The postdoctoral fellow position is for a period of 4 years starting fall 2016. I would greatly appreciated if you could forward this information and also inform potential candidates at your department about this opportunity.

About the project/work tasks:
The postdoc project will consist of two parts; detection and attribution of climate change, and teleconnection from tropical Pacific to high latitudes. Both observations and archived climate model output will be used. The work will focus on:

  • Assessing the relationship between global temperature change and natural and forced climate drivers
  • Identifying the roles of ocean heat uptake and storage in evolution of global mean temperatures
  • Studying the relationship between high latitude climatic trends and sea surface state in the tropical Pacific
  • Performing sensitivity experiments with sea surface temperature perturbations in the tropical Pacific

PosDoc in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling, Woods Hole

A postdoctoral position in Ocean Biogeochemical Modeling is available at the Marine Biological Lab, Woods Hole. This NSF-funded, collaborative project with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will focus on developing a thermodynamics- and trait-based biogeochemistry framework to augment the existing marine ecosystem modeling framework (“Darwin model”) developed at MIT. We are seeking an individual with a PhD in a scientific field and experience in marine biogeochemical modeling. While not required, knowledge in Fortran, thermodynamics, numerical analysis and/or optimal control theory will be considered advantageous. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with teams at both MBL and MIT, but will be employed at MBL. Review of applications will begin 1 June 2016 and continue until the position is filled. Funding support is available for three years, but performance will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Applications should be submitted to

Postdoctoral Fellow position at McGill University

Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Satellite Observation and Simulation

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University
in Montreal, Canada seeks a postdoctoral fellow to conduct and analyze
numerical simulation experiments that emulate high-spatial and
high-spectral resolution satellite measurements to retrieve atmospheric
trace gases and their emission information.

Required qualifications include:

PhD in Atmospheric Science or a related discipline (e.g., Meteorology,
Environmental Engineering, etc.);

Experience of scientific computing and ability to conduct numerical
experiments using the WRF-LES or similar CFD models; and

Experience or capability of applying inverse methods.

The initial appointment will be for 6 months, renewable contingent on
satisfactory performance and funding availability. Interested candidates
should contact Professor Yi Huang (yi.huang) by email,
enclosing a curriculum vitae, transcripts of academic records, and names
and contacts of two references.

PhD Sydney

Dear Colleagues,

Please forward the this message and link to people you know interested
in undertaking a Ph.D. in Sydney, Australia.

I would be happy to support applicants looking to work on quantitative
coral reef ecology. From previous experience with this scheme,
competitive applicants have outstanding undergraduate and Masters
grades, at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal

(more the better), excellent references, and some kind of university or
society award/prize. Importantly for me, the applicant would have
focused research ideas and the initiative and enthusiasm to pursue these

ideas independently.

Best wishes,

Ocean/Climate Modeller Position at GEOMAR

The research unit “Theory and Modelling” of the research division “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” at GEOMAR Kiel is offering a

Scientist Position (ocean/climate Modeller) in the funded project „AGULHAS“.

starting on July 1st 2016 (for the period of 2 years, subject to the agreement to provide funds).

Job Description:
To research the large-scale influence of the inflow from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic through the Agulhas system, we are seeking a physical oceanographer/climate scientist with experience in numerical modelling. Starting from an existing global ocean general circulation model (NEMO) with high-resolution nest around South Africa, coupling with an atmosphere model (ECHAM) shall be developed. This activity is closely embedded within working groups of ocean modelling and climate modelling at GEOMAR and internationally. Experiments will be performed, analyses published to understand the decadal variability of the global overturning circulation at mesoscale ocean resolution.

Qualification:
The person best suited for this position will have a study in (physical) oceanography or meteorology. We expect technical and scientific expertise in numerical ocean/climate modelling and excellent English language skills. The scientist will work in the modelling groups research unit “Theory and Modelling” and supervised by Prof. Dr. Arne Biastoch.
